Then and now

McCain, today:

“He should speak out that this is a corrupt, fraud, sham of an election,” said McCain, Obama’s opponent in last year’s presidential election. “The Iranian people have been deprived of their rights.”

“I think it’s possible to engage. But item number one is giving the Iranian people a free and fair election,” he said.

McCain, 2007:

A man — wondering if an attack on Iran is in the works — wanted to know when America is going to “send an air mail message to Tehran.” McCain began his answer by changing the words to a popular Beach Boys song. “Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran,” he sang to the tune of Barbara Ann.

It’s kinda hard to figure out why a guy who joked about pancaking Iran gives two shits about giving them free elections. And he ain’t alone on that.

Also, a diarist on DailyKos phenomenally dissects why McCain’s comments were both reckless and potentially harmful to the Iranian’s efforts.
