The new digs!

And we’re here! Welcome to the new home of Hanlon’s Razor. I’ve been hoping to transfer things to our own domain for a while now, and here we are. Things are a little rough around the edges at the moment, but over the next week or so we should have a better handle on the situation.

You’re going to notice some, hopefully, improvements. For one, the design is going to be changing gradually as I remind myself how to work with PHP/CSS pages, meaning I’m not limited to clicking on an image of a theme in WP.com’s repository. This offers a whole lot of benefits, such as listing the author of each post. You’ll notice that long posts are now abbreviated so you can click on a “read more” link if you want.

There’ll be more tweaks and improvements to look out for, and feel free to tell me if there’s any functionality issues, since now I can go to work on them myself instead of twiddling my thumbs hoping WordPress.com gets their act together. Please fix any bookmarks, but your RSS subscriptions should be fixed, so no worries there.

So you were running off their servers? ouch.
WP is a pretty nice package if hosted privately. There are lots of nice themes and addons available. Good luck with the development!

Looks expensive! (And a lot of work, too, no doubt!) How does the cost compare to hosting with WordPress?

  • I wasn’t killing their servers GENERALLY, but whenever I got a good pop things would slow down pretty hard. Digg/Fark/Reddit can be hard on a free hosting service. Good to see you back, woeds!

Rick: the cost is obviously rougher than hosting on WP.com because that’s free and this has a monthly fee, but since I bought a two years package it’s fairly doable. There’s a lot more work to it, but I hope it’ll translate to a better experience for everyone involved.

And thank you for putting the effort into following along! We butt heads, but hey, if I’m not arguing with people it means I’m not doing my job!

Oh, I see. I thought you were already on premium services, and that you had switched to private hosting now.

Message editing textbox could be a lot bigger.

    Comment preview mode wouldn’t hurt.

  • I’ll see what I can do. Comment Preview might be a touch tricky, but the textbox should be easy stuff.

Preview’s nice. Am I imagining things, or did the textbox get bigger briefly, and then small again?

I preferred your original wording of the Razor and the cursive font in your previous banner.

Also, I know you can click on the banner from anywhere to get home, but it’s still less-than-intuitive. It would be nice to have a “main” or “home” link from the individual post/comments view.
