Does Mitt Romney actually stand for anything?

The more I hear from this Mitt Romney fella, the more I start to think that every statement he makes is in the hopes of endearing himself to the conservative crowd. First off we’ve got his newfound hardline stance on abortion.

“My experience as governor taught me firsthand that the threat to our culture is real,” Romney said. “When responsibility for life or ending life was placed in my hands, I made the right decision.”

…Romney repeatedly vowed not to change state abortion laws and backed abortion rights as recently as 2 1/2 years ago, even though he insists he has always personally opposed the practice.

Now, as a presidential candidate, he not only emphasizes his personal opposition to abortion rights, but he also calls for the repeal of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion nationally.

He went from supporting the “status quo” as he put it, to calling it a threat to our culture. I find this unlikely, particularly since he only made the switch right when he decided it was time to run for president. Then we move along to his sudden jabbering about Scooter Libby.

Republican president candidate Mitt Romney, who denied every pardon or commutation during his term as Massachusetts governor, said Thursday a pardon for former White House aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby deserves a close examination.

“I took a careful review during my term as governor of the people that were brought forward. That doesn’t mean I pardoned them, but I took a careful review. I think this deserves a very careful review,” Romney told The Associated Press in a brief interview.

The abortion thing I can understand. You can switch views on that since it’s a hot button issue. You think you know what you think of it and then something just shocks you and makes you switcharoo. But given that the conservative MO right now is to fight tooth and nail for Libby’s pardon to the point of blasting the president for it, seeing Romney flip flop just smacks of pandering.

The more I think about it, the more I’d love Romney on the 2008 ticket. Because he’ll get annihilated by any of the strong Democratic candidates.
