Mike Gravel: the greatest president we will never have.

by Hanlon on April 28, 2007 at 4:05 pm

I just caught this video of former Sen. Mike Gravel (D-AL) and it’s simply stunning. I admittedly didn’t catch the DNC debate, I think it’s way too early to think about the emerging presidential campaign, but now I wish I had.

He’s saying everything we’ve all been saying on the left. All of those things that bloggers and pundits have been screaming but Democratic politicians have been too scared to say publicly, Gravel says. The war was lost from the moment Bush started it. The War on Terror is doomed to the same failure as the War on Drugs. I’m not afraid of any nations from a war standpoint, though I’m terrified of potential economic disasters.

Sadly, we’ll never see this man in the White House. He’s speaking too candidly, too honestly. He’s going to get trounced by a John Edwards or Barack Obama. I like both of those guys a lot but they really are worried about image, while I don’t see Sen. Gravel having that problem at all. A beautiful speech, right there.

Here’s a guy who’s walked the walk — he took on Richard Nixon and won by carrying on a one-man filibuster to end the draft; he brought the truth behind our involvement in that ugly war in Southeast Asia to the American people by releasing the Pentagon Papers and now he’s running for President because he’s fed up and believes that truth should prevail over power. If you really want that type of leader in the White House, then you can’t wring your hands and claim “woe is me”. Get behind Mike, because he’s throwing himself whole heartedly into this effort. Check out http://www.gravel2008.us and get involved! It’s not a stretch to say that our future depends on your ACTIVE involvement.

“In the Battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed.”[5]

Talk Radio Puppet Michael Medved is saying this is not synonymous
with “Mission Accomplished.”

It is a shame that the media from Left to Right (ie NPR to Fox) is treating his campaign as a joke. I did not even know he was running until reviews about his debate performance popped up, and those reviews always included some catty remarks about his behavior.

It looks to me as if he is as upset about our (read: USA) forgein policy disasters as most everyone I know who isn’t running for president. This man really was the most senior politician on that stage and dang he made some great points. I wish that garnered him respect instead of ridicule.
