While North Korea tests its missiles and Iraq burns, Iran reminds us all that they aren’t going to stop pursuing nuclear energy.
Iran’s hard-line leaders said Tuesday their country would not retreat from its controversial nuclear program despite international demands that it do so.
“Our policy is clear: progress, offering transparent logic and insisting on the rights of the nation without retreat,” supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, according to state-run television.
What else can I say? I would call this the republican nightmare. North Korea’s recent testing has most likely emboldened Iran, it says that there are few if any repercussions to going after the nukes themselves, and here they’re just claiming a desire for energy.

We have two less-than-friendly nations openly pursuing nuclear technology.
One happily claims to have the bomb. Our response: “Wow, this sucks. Boy did Clinton screw up. Hey, let’s get other countries to talk to them.”
The other has not tested a weapon. It claims only to have energy. Our response: “Let’s kill ‘em all.” We have even sent a naval strike fleet to the Persian Gulf, scheduled to arrive there just before our election.
And we’re supposed to trust the republicans on security?
Whoa, where’d you find out about the Persian Gulf fleet? That’s something I’d like to see for myself.
As for the comparison, I think bringing up the Iraq War is apt as well. Didn’t test a weapon, didn’t have the materials, didn’t have the ability. Our response? A war.
The message really does seem to be “if you want a nuke, get it quick before we attack and you’ll be home free.”
David Lindorff wrote the original article in The Nation magazine that predicted the deployment of the Eisenhower Carrier group to the Gulf. He has an article on buzzflash.com claiming that that carrier group has set sail. Based on Lindorff’s work, both Randi Rhodes and Ed Schultz discussed it yesterday. Seems they think this will be the October Surprise.
And good point about the Iraq comparison.
Schultz is now calling this fleet deployment a “normal rotation” that was sent out a bit early.
Looking on Buzzflash right now. That’s… more than a little alarming. Good find. Sure would be one hell of a surprise.
